It is still necessary for pilots to take medical exams every 6 or 12 months for a first-class medical certificate, every 12 months for a second-class medical certificate, and 24 or 60 months, depending on the age, for a third-class one. Those who don't pass the color plates test in the AME office can still be issued a medical certificate, but they will be limited to not flying at night or monitoring the color signal. The Airman's Medical Standards and Certification Procedures, Part 67 of the FAR, are a complex set of medical and legal language that can be both clear and concise in some areas, while being general and imprecise in others.
